Most air conditioners will last for 15 to 20 years before they should be replaced. After that, they usually start to work less efficiently and are more prone to breakdowns. And yet, some HVAC systems have been known to last for 25 or even 30 years before they finally stop working.
While it’s unlikely that your residential air conditioner will go strong for three decades, there are things that you can do to prolong its lifespan.
1. Schedule Regular Tune-Ups
The best way to keep your AC running for years is to schedule at least one tune-up every year, preferably in the spring before it gets really hot outside. During a tune-up, an HVAC technician will tighten electrical connections, test the blower motor and fan, and replenish refrigerant levels. They may even find minor problems that can be quickly and easily fixed before they turn into costly repairs.
2. Replace Your Air Filters Regularly
Your air conditioner has filters that remove dust, dander, and other pollutants from the air. These filters naturally get very dirty and need to be replaced regularly. Going too long without replacing your air filters will force your AC to work harder to maintain a proper temperature, which will reduce its lifespan. Replace your filters monthly to keep your AC working at peak efficiency and to improve your home’s air quality.
3. Turn On Ceiling Fans
Ceiling fans won’t lower the temperature in a space, but they can keep air moving to help that space feel cooler. Your air conditioner will still be the primary method of keeping your home cool, but turning on some ceiling fans will take some of the load off your AC so it doesn’t have to work as hard.
4. Use Your AC’s Auto Mode
Almost all air conditioners have an “Auto” mode that only turns on the fan when it’s needed. Once your home reaches the desired temperature, the fan will turn off and not turn itself on again until it’s needed. Not only will your air conditioner not have to work as hard to keep your home cool, but you’ll probably lower your monthly energy bills as well.
5. Insulate Your Home
You should already have insulation, but you may need to upgrade it if you’ve been feeling too hot or cold. If you do need to do so, go with spray foam since it can last for up to 100 years. In any case, proper insulation will keep warm air out of your home in the summer and cold air out in the winter, which will help your HVAC system work more efficiently throughout the year.
