What to do in a Power Outage

A power outage happens when you least expect it. It also seems to happen at the most inconvenient time. Absolute Plumbing, Electrical, Heating & Air is here to help you and your family through this frustrating and unpleasant situation. Believe it or not, a Denver CO power outage does not always mean an emergency. However, it is important to note, that if you experience a power outage, call your energy service provider or your local fire department to find out if there have been any problems in the area. Below is a list of our power outage tips to get you through a dreaded Denver CO power outage next time one should occur.

Check your Electrical Panel

Occasionally a circuit breaker will flip which causes the power to go out. When this happens the power will shut down in an isolated area of your home. However, it can affect the entire house. Try flipping the switch back on if it has flipped off, then check for power. If the power is still off and the panel looks fine, check next door to see if they have power. If not, chances are your neighborhood is experiencing a power outage.

Use Flashlights, Not Candles

Many homeowners keep a flashlight handy should they ever need one. Make sure you have one handy in your home as well. Check the batteries every 6 months and always have an extra, unopened pack stored with the flashlight in case the batteries are dead. If you choose to use candles, make sure you use one or two, and that they are burning in a safe place. Candles can quickly become a fire hazard.

Keep Your Refrigerator and Freezer Doors Closed

Since you don’t know how long you will be without power, it is important to keep your refrigerated foods cold. Most cold food can survive in a closed fridge without power for about 4 hours. Freezers will keep their temperature for 48 hours. If you can, eat things that don’t require you to open the fridge.

Prepare an Emergency Supply Box

If you don’t already have one, start organizing an emergency supply box for your home. Store things in it like flashlights, batteries, a radio, cash, bottled water and non-perishable foods. You never know how long your power will be out when it happens, so be prepared.
