3 Ways to Lower Your Energy Bill in Winter

Here are a Few Ways To Lower Your Energy Bill

With cold, chilly wind and plunging temperatures, people rely on their heating system to stay warm and toasty inside their home. This leads to higher energy bills. The good news is that you can keep the costs under control while keeping your family comfortable.

Here are 3 easy ways to lower your energy bill in winter.

1. Lower the thermostat

The heating system accounts for about 48% of energy use in an average American household. After all, most people rely on their heating system to stay warm and comfortable during the winter months. The good news is that you can stay warm and toasty during the coldest months of the year without having to spend a huge sum of money. The secret lies in lowering the thermostat.

Set the thermostat to 68°F when you’re at home and then set it 5 to 7°F lower before you leave for work. There is no point in wasting money and heating cost if no one is at home. Studies suggest that you can lower your energy bill by up to 3% for every one degree drop. By adjusting your thermostat, you can reduce your heating cost without having to sacrifice your family’s comfort.

2. Lower water heater temperature

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, water heating accounts for 15-25% of your utility bill. If you’ve already made an effort to reduce your home’s heating cost and your energy bills are still skyrocketing, your water heater may be the culprit.

Most water heaters come pre-set at 140°F. At this temperature, you’re not only at risk of scalding; you’re also wasting a substantial amount of energy. To cut down on your energy bill, we recommend adjusting the temperature to 120°F. You can save 3-5% on your heating costs just for every 10°F reduction in temperature.

3. Use the sun for free heat

The temperatures may be freezing, but the sun can provide added heat to your home. Take advantage of the sun’s heat by opening your curtains or blinds during the day. Let the sunlight in and allow it to naturally heat your home. Make sure to close the curtains and blinds at night to keep the heat inside and reduce the chill you may feel.
