Tips to Extend the Life of Your Furnace

At Absolute Plumbing, Electrical, Heating & Air in Denver, we know that there are ways for renters and homeowners to extend the life of a furnace to save money. There are several ways to maintain a furnace to avoid needing unnecessary repair and help extend the life of your furnace.

Tip 1: Keep a Furnace Dry

When your home’s water heater or other plumbing fixtures are near a furnace, the moisture from these items can damage the heating equipment. Make sure to maintain the pipes and the water heater in your home to avoid any leaks that can damage a furnace. Inspect your home’s furnace and the nearby plumbing fixtures occasionally to find any problems that require a repair.

Tip 2: Change the Furnace’s Air Filter Frequently

Changing your furnace’s air filter once a month can prolong its life. The debris that collects in the air filters will prevent the proper flow of the air into and out of the system, making the furnace work harder. In addition, household dust and pet hair will collect on the components of the furnace, leading to hot mechanisms that may overheat.

Tip 3: Vacuum a Furnace’s Mechanisms

You can use a small vacuum cleaner and dust cloths to remove the debris from a furnace’s mechanisms. Make sure to turn off the furnace before completing this chore, and you can begin by removing the debris from the outside of the furnace. Next, remove the cover of the furnace to dust the components inside, using caution to avoid anything related to the furnace’s electrical system. This is also a good time to check the furnace’s filter to determine if it requires a replacement.

Tip 4: Don’t Pile Clutter around the Furnace

While a furnace is often located in a basement or a utility room, you should avoid piling clutter around it because it will block the proper flow of air. Don’t stack cardboard boxes or plastic totes around the furnace at any time of the year. In addition, never have any combustible items around the furnace because it can lead to an explosion or a fire that will damage the climate-control equipment. Think of a fireplace, you wouldn’t stack things in front of it then turn it on.

Tip 5: Request a Professional Furnace Tune-up

It is important to have a professional furnace tune-up during the autumn to prepare the climate-control equipment for the winter. However, if you neglected this maintenance task, then you can have a technician perform an inspection at any time. The technician is responsible for checking the furnace’s mechanisms, changing the air filter, lubricating the components and inspecting the ductwork for problems. This type of service can extend the life of your home’s furnace.
