4 Lighting Options for Your Kitchen

4 Lighting Options for Your Kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of the home, and lighting plays a powerful role in the functionality and aesthetics of this important space. Take stock by reviewing four lighting options for your kitchen. Is your kitchen lighting working for you, or are you ready for an update?

Overhead Lighting

Most builder-grade kitchens in the Denver, CO area come with some sort of overhead lighting. Your overhead lights could be recessed, track lighting, or close-to-ceiling lights such as flush mount or semi-flush mount fixtures. The lighting most outdated is the giant fluorescent box, which unfortunately was common for homes built in the late 80s and 90s. Replacing the fluorescent box with recessed lights—or even a chandelier—will add aesthetic value to your home.

Island Lights

Kitchen islands are a great location for a unique and stylish light. The fixture should cast enough light downward for tasks at the island, and many options provide this function with personality. If having a pot rack over the island is your style, there’s a chandelier/pot rack combo just for you! The possibilities are endless, from rustic metal pipe and Edison bulb designs to glam chandeliers with shiny chrome and all the crystals. These fixtures could be a bold statement or a glass design that has a minimal visual footprint.

Pendants

Pendants are a popular lighting option for kitchen peninsulas, which may have an area for seating. A collection of two or more large pendants can also be used to accommodate your island geometry. Pendants also offer a wide variety of styles and sizes to fit your needs and personality.

Under Cabinet Lighting

Under cabinet lights add significant functionality to kitchens. Upper cabinets often cast shadows on the counters beneath them, and under cabinet lighting helps you chop vegetables without being in the dark. Depending on your budget, you can add light bars or puck lights that are either hard wired or plug into an outlet. LED tape lights are a popular option for under cabinet lighting as they offer energy-efficient, dimmable light. Dimmed under cabinet lighting is popular in the evenings after dinner has been cleared away.

Keep in mind the placement of your under cabinet lights. They should be installed either in the middle or the front of your cabinet to best light your counters below. We recommend testing the location of the lights before installation to make sure the light is best for your needs.
