How to Prepare for a Power Outage

Power outages can be inconvenient and sometimes even dangerous. By preparing for an outage, you can reduce the amount of frustration it causes you. Here are things you can do ahead of time to prepare for a power outage.

Emergency Preparedness Kit

It’s important to keep a well-stocked emergency preparedness kit with items such as flashlights, batteries, cash, and first aid supplies. Think about how many flashlights you may need for your home if the power goes out for an extended period. In addition, stores may not be open, or roads may be impassible, so make sure you have what you need ahead of time. If the power is out and you can get around town, you may not be able to pay for items by credit card, so keeping an emergency amount of cash is helpful.

Charge Your Electronics

If you know a storm could knock out your power, make sure to keep your cell phones and any other battery-powered electronics charged ahead of time. Also, plan how you would charge these items if the power is out, such as charging in your car.

Prep your Car

When a storm is headed your way, make sure to fill up your vehicle’s gas tank. If you park your car in a garage, make sure you know how to manually operate the garage door if the power is out. Remember that you should not run your car in a closed garage, which can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.

Purchase a Generator

If your needs mean you cannot go without power, you might consider getting a generator for your home. A certified electrician should come evaluate your needs and help you choose the right model of generator. The electrician can also install and test it in advance, teaching you how to use it safely.
