Homeowner’s Guide to Electrical Safety
For homeowners, there are some things to worry about when it comes to protecting your home and the people inside it. We know you are concerned about plumbing, heating, cooling, and everything else, but it’s not often people stop to think about their electrical home health.
Our electrical systems are extremely important to the things we do in our homes each day, and it’s essential to make sure everything is working correctly. Even more important, is ensuring that the electrical in your home is safe.
When it comes to electrical systems throughout the home, safety means taking some precautions to avoid potential dangers.
At Absolute Plumbing, Electrical, Heating & Air, our team dedicates their time to making sure our customers know what precautions to take to keep themselves and others safe. We are here to help you understand things to look out for, what you can do if an emergency strikes and ways you can help keep your children safe.
Child Safety Tips for Your Home Electrical
When it comes to your children, safety should always be a top priority, especially when it comes to something as dangerous as electrical in the home. There are some things you want to consider when it comes to your electrical system. Here are some of the things you can do to keep your children safe.
- Wiring: Be sure to ensure that you have wiring properly connected and covered, out of reach of children. Your children should not be able to touch any of the wiring, so don’t leave it exposed.
- Outlets: We’ve all been told as children that the outlets in our homes are not toys. We shouldn’t touch it or play with it. This is the same lesson you should teach your children. Keep your outlets covered with child safety products to prevent your children from playing with them.
- Electrical outlet cover: There are covers that you can use to protect the outlet when cords are plugged in. This prevents your children from pulling out the plugs. It could cause a spark and potentially harm your child.
What to Look Out for When It Comes to Your Electrical
Unfortunately, not everyone recognizes the potential signs of danger when it comes to electrical outlets and how to be safe. At times, items get moved around the home without thinking twice of what’s surrounding the items. You want to be on the lookout for some things to keep you and your family safe. Putting flammable items too close to electrical outlets can be dangerous. If items are too close and something goes wrong, a spark could catch the flammable item, leading to a serious fire.
Another thing to check for is any wire that may be exposed. Checking for wires means ensuring that electrical outlets and light switches have proper plates covering the wires. Also, if you have any electrical cords, ensure the cover is over the wires.
Things You Can Do in an Emergency
Emergencies are an unfortunate possibility when electrical in your home is not up to code or if something goes wrong. Whether there is a big problem with your electrical system or something happens such as a fire, you want to make sure you’re prepared and know what to do.
First, make sure you cut the power, so nothing is flowing through the wires. If a fire starts, use whatever is necessary to get the fire out such as an extinguisher or even smother it. Make sure you have an evacuation plan and can call emergency services.
Once the dust has settled, make sure you’re taking action to correct the problems that may be present. You should avoid doing any of the electrical work yourself as it can be dangerous when you’re not sure what you’re doing.
