5 Ways To Unclog Your Drain

Woman using a plunger in the kitchen sink

Dealing with a clogged sink can feel like a never-ending battle. Luckily, there are a variety of cost-effective ways you can clear your drains and bring peace back into your home.

At Absolute Plumbing, Electrical, Heating & Air, we understand the importance of reliable plumbing and how frustrating slow drains can be. Here are five ways to clear drain blockages.

Hot Water & Dish Soap

For a mild drain clog, start with a tried-and-true method – hot water and dish soap. Boil a pot of water and pour it down the drain, followed by a generous amount of dish soap.

The combination of hot water and soap can break down grease and grime that may be causing the clog. Let it sit for a few minutes, then flush the drain with more hot water. This often works like a charm for minor clogs.

Baking Soda & Vinegar

For a more stubborn clog, turn to the power duo of baking soda and vinegar. Start by pouring a cup of baking soda into the drain, followed by a cup of vinegar. The mixture will create a fizzy reaction that helps break down the blockage.

Allow the combination to set for 30 minutes, then flush the drain with hot water. This method is effective as well as eco- and cost-friendly.

The Classic Plunger

The plunger is a classic tool for clearing clogs and a staple in every household. To use it effectively:

  1. Ensure you have a good seal by covering the drain completely with the plunger.
  2. Push down firmly, then pull up forcefully, creating a suction that can dislodge the clog.
  3. Repeat this motion several times, and the blockage should break free.
  4. Remember to use a plunger specifically designed for sinks or toilets, depending on the drain you’re trying to unclog.

Drain Cleaning Fluids

Now and then, you may have a more severe clog that calls for heavy-duty chemicals. While drain cleaners like Drano and other brands can help with more drain buildup than the above-mentioned solutions, they can also harm your plumbing system if used incorrectly or excessively.

Drain-cleaning fluids are not suitable for all types of clogs. They’re typically effective for organic matter-based clogs but may not be as effective against mineral deposits or solid obstructions. If you’re unsure what kind of clog you have, it’s best to call a professional plumber.

Drain Snakes

Drain snakes are worth considering if you prefer a tool specifically designed for unclogging drains. These flexible and versatile tools come in various lengths and feature a coiled wire or cable with a tip designed to grab onto clogs.

Insert the drain snake into the drain opening and rotate or push it gently, allowing the tip to latch onto the clog. Slowly pull out the snake, bringing the clog with it. Dispose of any debris caught on the snake and repeat the process if necessary.

Hire a Plumbing Professional

While DIY methods can often resolve common clogs, there are instances when it’s best to call a professional plumber. These can include when you’re dealing with persistent or recurring clogs, complex and severe clogs, or simply want to ensure you’re clog-free for the long term.

When that happens, contact the plumbers at Absolute Plumbing, Electrical, Heating & Air. We have the experience, tools, and skills to eliminate even the toughest clog.
